ABC’s decision to dismiss Stana Katic from Castle only to turn around and cancel the series altogether was more than just a colossal PR fiasco. It marked an ugly end to the procedural’s eight-year run, forever staining the show’s legacy. Now, for the first time, Katic is addressing the 2016 incidentin the current issue ofEntertainment Weekly.

“I’m actually still not clear on the thought process behind the way that it went down,” the actress tells the mag. “It hurt and it was a harsh ending.”

However, Katic — whose 10-episode psychological thriller Absentia makes its Amazon debut on Feb. 2 — has since made peace with the circumstances surroundingCastle‘s conclusion and is now choosing to focus on the positive. “I met so many beautiful people [on the show], and we collaborated on something really unique,” she shares. “It would be a disservice to those people, to the work that we did together, and to my work, which I feel contributed, in part, to the success of the show, to be anything but grateful.

“It was a formative experience,” she continues, “and we told a love story that I feel moved people, touched people, and I can’t be anything but glad that I was a part of something like that. I hope it remains something special in viewers’ minds forever.”

  1. Stana being fired was bitter ending for great 8 seasons of Castle. Its disgusting she had to go through it

    • I really appreciate how gracious she is about the whole thing. No matter what she might say behind closed doors, she’s actively choosing to keep it positive out of respect for her co-workers. The messy side of me would love for her to one day spill the tea Ellen Pompeo style, but I won’t hold my breath on that. In the meantime, she’s got my respect.

  2. Guess she should have gone with a two year contract rather than a one year once season 7 ended.

    Reply

    • They could have dismissed her at any time, contract or not. That wouldn’t have ensured anything.

      Reply

    • You mean the 1 year contract she didn’t even want to sign in the first place?

If she hadn’t dragged her feet the season before because she wanted out only to realise she had no other options and then sign at the last minute when they had already started to work around her leaving (and then having to sack Penny Johnson-Jerald when Stana did sign on for another year as they needed to fit her into this reworking) then I could understand her being a bit hurt but if you mess people around 1 year you can’t exactky be surprised if they decide to take the decision out of your hand next time

            Reply

            • Everyone else was signed and announced by April. She didn’t sign until just before upfronts. She ended up signing in her own words because she liked the pitch about the creative changes made to accommodate her. So she signed off on the changes to Beckett when she didn’t have to yet suddenly everyone but her is to blame for the changes made for her not working

I enjoyed her work on C and am sorry there was some negativity shadowing the show , since it’s content was so lighthearted. Goes to show you that a successful show and a copacetic set are not always easy to achieve. • Holy mother of god. It was a cheesy sitcom and Tim Allen was too greedy to take a lower paycheque to keep the show going. Add into it that ABC didn’t own the show and was paying royalties to 20th Century Fox to AIR the show.. Let it go. There’s reruns playing all the time and it’s on Netflix. Just watch it there.

        Reply

        • There have been plenty of actors who have agreed to pay cuts in order to keep their shows on the air. Pretty famously, The Simpsons cast and producers agreed to cuts a couple years ago. Some also agree to cuts to keep peace on the set, and keep actors who contribute significantly from leaving. The highest paid members of the cast of Friends and The Big Bang Theory agreed to cuts so that all the stars of the show would be paid equally, for example. There’s no conspiracy here. Just Tim Allen trying to convince people that he’s a martyr for his beliefs rather than a greedy arse.

          Reply

        • So why is Roseanne back on ABC? Please get your facts right. The endless whining about LMS ending because of politics is ridiculous. ABC did not own the show so it did not get profits from it( why else would OUAT and Agents of Shield still be on the air?) When you don’t own a show you don’t give out big fat pay raises no matter how big a star. You also don’t give out big pay raises to an older show that barely was above fractional. If Tim Allen really wanted his show to survive he would have compromised end of story.

          Reply

          • ABC don’t directly profit from OUAT or AoS as the network don’t own them. The networks only profit from shows via the ads and any carriage fees (or if its a subscription channel the sub income). The Network are also not the ones who hire and pay the actors (Katic shows this, ABC studios decided not to renew her contract not the Network who hadn’t even decided to pick it up or not)

Given two similar shows yes the network will generally go with the one from the studio of their parent company because they generally get first look at any show that studio produces and as it’s an easy outlet for the studios the studio will generally give that network a slightly cheaper licence fee to keep it going than they would to a different network but even then it’s only if the other revenue streams prove profitable

            Reply

        • Lol sounds like you don’t understand ratings or the cost of production.

          Reply

They canceled shows like Forever, they ruined Nashville made Agents of Shield darker and just cut Man with a Plan and changed the course of Castle. Everything back then was geared towards Scandal type shows. Ironically they are trying to go more family now with the Goldbergs, Good Dr, and bringing back American Idol. Castle to me was a victim of story tellling gone the wrong direction not reflection on the cast. ABC was wrong to fire her and kill the show.

        • I wish people really had better judgment and wouldn’t jump to conclusions about people they didn’t even know. You don’t know any of these people, you don’t know what their relationship is, you don’t know what their respective relationship was with the network, with their contracts, with anything. So when you don’t know anything, you shouldn’t go about assigning blame or making massive assumptions based on nothing but fandom bias and prejudice. There’s absolutely zero evidence that Nathan ever felt threatened by Stana or anyone ever in his 20 year career. The idea is absurd and nothing more but Stanatic fanfiction. Rather than subscribe to weird baseless fandom conspiracies, look at the fact that the rest of the Castle cast continues to get on great with Nathan, including all the female cast. Susan, Molly, Penny, Toks all have massive love and respect for Nathan. People who have known and worked with him for years are a better judge of his character than any random fan who does not even know any of these people. Think about that and try to be kinder towards people you don’t even know, genuine fan or not.

          • Amen. Truth is, both sides have the same amount of “bad apples,” and I do my best to filter out of here the multi-username extremists and those who attack actors on a personal level. –Mgmt.

          • Well, for it became clear that sth was going on with Fillion when Andrew Marlow stop following Fillion on Tw after Fillion’s offcial realease on the subject was made. And, by the way, that seversl characters have still being amicable with both (yet Molly being as we know much more close to Fillion), but the CREW was also commenting on that in TW aftjer it happened and curiously, were always addressing their likening Katic.
This year things became clearer, Marlow has a show and the SR that was the orn de derailed the show at the end and was so pro-Fillion has gave him his own show. I am more interested in the firs one more (I liked more the Marlow seasons than the others in Castle) and cause, after Fillion “being coupled” with Haley in Modern Family this “in his 50’s with a 20 sth girl is beginning to make me uncomfortable”
Anyway, I agree entirely with Anna: I didn’t like thr response of Fillion to the situation, and not because it was towards Stana, I would have disliked it if being done towards any other actress/actor all the same. In the same way I didn’t like H50 leads “not handling” in a classy way what was happening with their colleagues. I like what TBBT did, what the BBC presenters are doing… so,in this sense, yes, I blame Fillion for his passivity.

            Reply

          • Respectfully disagree, Matt. For me the evidence, circumstantial as it is, begins in the middle of the Castle run, S 5 -6, with what we saw onscreen and read in interviews and the leads’ own social media. As for the two having the same amount of “bad apples” I have yet to read anything against Stana in any substantial forum. I can’t say the same for Fillion.

            Reply

        • It was all Stana’s doing. People forget that she dragged her feet for season 8 and only signed at the very last minute. Not knowing either way when they have already started breaking the stories is hardly great for creativity. It clearly did have an impact on season 9 and she said herself she only signed on based on the changes to Beckett that were proposed so she was even onboard with the changes in season 9 that people like to blame Fillion for.She also was pretty open that she wasn’t sure about coming back for a season 10. When you have someone who the year before stalled which caused issues to the production and which saw the new role of Beckett really didn’t work (She became Scully of the Dogget/Reyes years of X-Files in that they would end up being secondary characters in their new role but which were a constant reminder of what things were which becomes a weight around the shows neck rather than being able to evolve) why are you going to go through that again especially when Stana only signed when the new role was proposed so wouldn’t want to go back if she would have even signed for season 10 anyway. It needed to make a decision of what it was going to do in season 10 which meant making sure they knew early on who they had cast wise which meant making decisions like not offering a new contract to Stana

          Reply

          • Who are you?? You act like you know them personally, if I recall Nathan also was late signing his contract!! If I was her I wouldn’t of signed it either…don’t you think she knew where the storyline was headed after Milmar left??

            Reply

            • Unlike you I clearly have an ability to read. Everyone was later than normal due to the change in showrunner but everyone else was signed up by April, she signed a few days before the upfronts. And yes she knew where the story was going, she is on record saying it was Hawleys pitch for the changes to her character that had her sign

          • I think you have the seasons wrong. The show was cancelled after season 8, there was no season 9 that could have been impacted and no potential season 10.

But Stana renewed her contract for season 8 only a couple of weeks after Nathan’s deal was announced and only a couple days after the renewal. I read elsewhere she had asked for the same deal as Nathan, so if that were true it would explain why she didn’t finalize her deal until after him. But the writers didn’t report for work until June and production didn’t start until July, so while I’m sure there were preliminary talks about the plan before that, I don’t see what impact that delay could really have had. It’s not like Nathan had signed months before her and new showrunners were in place for ages without knowing what was going on. The selection of showrunners, the renewal, and Stana’s signing was all within a couple days of each other.

And she did say she re-signed when she heard the plan for her character, but that’s probably because it sounds better than to say she signed when they agreed to give her $12 million and knew she’d never get close to that anywhere else. Very few people would walk away from that kind of money because they think the story is dumb. And as we all know, Beckett’s story in season 8 was pretty dumb.

I do believe she may not have wanted to sign on for season 9 or had told ABC that….either as a negotiating technique or because she meant it and it backfired on her. But there are two sides to any negotiation, so I am sure someone on ABC’s end would have a different view of how it all went down than Stana. What ABC may see as “dragging her feet,” Stana could see as being jerked around and not getting what she’s worth. We’ll never know the real truth.

    • The same happened to me. Castle was supposed to be a show I would buy on dvd and rewatch fondly. The way they treated Stana and the others fired and the cocky statements by Fillion (plus creator Marlow stopping following Fillion on TW) left me bad taste and not feeling like watching again.
I would had done the very same had any other in the show being treated that way.
And I also had to admit that having watch the entire absentia series I thought it was not very good. Poor character devleopment (sometimes inconsistent) and some poor acting from few actors. I do believe it has to do with money and time constraints and I hope it they get a season 2 they do it in better coditions so the final product gets better. (Or maybe it may weell be i don’t get the filming style of a Nordic Thriller)

      Reply

      • No cocky statements were made by anyone. The only people who didn’t behave with class were fans, not the actors. Marlowe has credited Nathan with his leadership on the show. Nathan has credited Stana with being his partner every bit of the way on Castle. People really need to let it go, stop making assumptions when they don’t know the people or events involved, and move on.

        Reply

        • Well, you betyer checked Marlow first tw after Nathan comment was relished, the fact that he stop following Fillion straight after, Miller praising Stana, etc. And by cocky I mean the “thanks stana but I will play Castle on my own for lots of years so-and-so”. He relly thinks high of himself and that permeated his statements. Funny enough after it was cancelled he dismissed castle as a “meh” thing (in an interview at the comCon).
Plus, i did let it go, cause I show is a show, but I can’t stan injustice and here one was commited and it the subject pulls back as it has done with this TVline publication I will keep advocating for the injustice that took part.

          Reply

          • I have no interest in further discourse with you, but I have zero tolerance with people anymore who keep lying about others. Nathan never dismissed Castle as meh or otherwise in any way in any interview, ever. Please stop putting words into peoples’ mouths that were never there. That is perpetuating an injustice, hardly the way to correct any.

As to Quasar, your nasty record of hate speech, lies and defamation towards other cast members is well recorded on the internet. As is that of others. You can’t pretend it didn’t happen. Sadly so much deep seated prejudice and obsessive hate for years against people you don’t know. Yes, you guys really need to let it go. Behave better because Stana deserves better fans who understand respect towards others. You praise Stana for her classiness but it’s a real shame so many of her vocal fans cannot emulate her in that regard. I don’t understand how fans can praise their idol for one thing and that behave exactly the opposite way in their name.

Cause I don’t have any record of anything on internet since I bareley comment on it. So stop bullying with lies people whose opinions you dislike.
            That’s very cheap.

  10. I hope this finally puts an end to the rumours that Stana left of her own accord. The Castle love story that she so profusely and eloquently spoke about many, many times while Castle was on the air was derailed in later seasons of the show.
If anyone with half an ounce of intelligence watches the show (or watched) this derailment was definitely not for the benefit of the story or the shows central relationship. Makes you wonder why they did it, doesn’t it? *cough*

    • ….you do realize that just because someone says something in an interview, it doesn’t mean they’re telling the whole truth, right?

      Reply

      • Pretty sure she was classy with her answer, and maybe she is telling the truth! I think she could of said a lot more of what went down but we all pretty much know even if you don’t want to admit it….oh and before I get accused I like Nathan on TV but he does come off as sort of an arse. He’s all for himself he doesn’t like to share the spot light

        Reply

        • Everyone probably has their own version of their truth, but it’s not the whole truth. It takes many sides to complete a picture. And the fans definitely don’t have that! So they should stop assigning blame and thinking they know anything and just move on. Nathan has had no problems sharing the spotlight with anyone in his 20 year career. He is the first to credit others, always, in his projects and downplay himself, same as Stana. If you read and listen to him, you would know that. The rest of the Castle cast get along with him great post Castle, so if he were all for himself, I doubt they would still want him in their lives.

          • He’s never really been a lead either except firefly so there’s that. Molly and Susan hang out with him sure they played a family but the others not so much. They were all up his a$$ when Castle was trying to be renewed! It’s no secret that Stana and Nathan didn’t like each other and you seem like a expert at reading people, you can totally tell by the body language. Unless you know them both then we will ever know but it seems to me you can’t accept the fact that he may have been in the wrong!! I’m sure she’s no angel either. Men in Hollywood think they are superior and that’s really coming out lately..think about it. Oh and we will see how his new show does also

  14. As always, Stana is classy and positive in her outlook. Her portrayal of Kate Beckett certainly touched this viewer for all time. Cannot wait to see what she brings to Emily in Absentia. One week to go!

  15. Castle would not have been the show it was without Stana. Her treatment at the hands of TPTB was not just sad but disturbing. Her refusal to stoop to name calling shows what a classy lady she truly is. I had already made the decision to be done with the show once her firing was announced. A sad ending to a once stellar show.

  16. ABC should still be ashamed what they did to both Stana, Castle, and the whole Castle ensemble. I am still trying to wrap my head around that stupidity. Stana should have been hurt. She bled for her show and did nothing but promote Castle and her character, Beckett. I have dropped ABC from my daily lineup.

  17. “Forever staining the shows legacy” sorry it didn’t stain just their legacy but the entire show. I cant even watch earlier seasons of the show without the bitter after taste of the fighting, bullying and bitterness between the two leads. Castle used to be my favourite but i went back to Bones (which was my #1 show until Castle came into the picture) with the exception of two eps from s8 i couldn’t give you a summary of the other 20 eps even though i sat and watched 1.5 yrs after it was cancelled.

    • Wow, people are so dramatic. It was a tv show, a really good one, what happens behind the scenes is of no consequence to me. Great show, still watch what the episodes I bought on iTunes all the time. Favorite episode was “Still” and “Lives of Others” and most of season 5, which was so much fun.

      • Exactly. Nothing was stained, nothing was ruined. I still enjoy the show. What sometimes ruined it for me was crazy hateful fans who would never stop with their hate and drama on the internet. For years. Sometimes I think it’s better for people just to watch TV shows in a vacuum because too many fans can’t separate their own fan prejudice and fanmade narratives from reality as well as the fictional TV show.

    • Stana got paid $12m. She stayed for that, just as other actors also stayed for their paycheck and wanted it to continue. Fans love to think everything’s about them, but it’s not about them! And I’m inclined to think that people who don’t actually know any of these people should stop badmouthing them on the internet based on nothing but their own prejudice and ignorance. The rest of the cast still hang out with Nathan and get along great.

      • I believe that was her total income for that year, not just for Castle, she also made two films in the period covered by that article, and if it had been just for Castle that would have worked out at over $500K per episode, which is definately not what she was getting, although Castle obviously provided the bulk of her income.

And FYI it is pretty normal to promote a project, every actor does promotion of some kind of another at some point Why would anyone expect Stana Katic to not promote her project or answer questions posed by a journalist. I hope this show succeeds for her

  20. Why was castle cancelled ,,theree was a huge group of us excited when Castle came on , ,,we loved all main characters.
Especially Beckett and Castles romance and their solving crime together …,we all miss this series so much …. we see castle will be on his own series Rookie ! Why don’t you bring Beckett onto the series ?????

  24. Parents teach your children. Stana Katic can be described in a word, Classy.
She is still not clear because she was naive.
We watched her put her heart and soul into bringing the fans Beckett that we admired. But more than admiring Beckett we admired the hard work and commitment that we could sense Stana was giving to this role. She felt she owed the fans her best.
To give her best was out of respect for the fans and the process. Each week we could sense Stana always giving her best and in no way did she deserve the treatment she received.
And I can see things were never fully explained to her but they shouldn’t have been because to do so would have meant more lies. That lame budgetary lie only served to insult Stana and the fans.

She was hurt, we were hurt and while I have moved on and I have begun to forget Castle because it ended on such a sour note I hope that she too is moving on.

Memories will fade with time but you can bet she will never forget.
There is no need to point fingers because I believe that ‘No Good Deed Goes Unrewarded and No Bad Deed Goes Unpunished’.
But whatever, it is a certainty that Stana Katic has Class.
    Now on to Absentia folks!!!

    But what I won’t forget is h

    • Right, until Montgomery was killed off, it was one of the best shows ever, in the history of TV. I got the feeling different writers and showrunners had their favorite Castle characters and character traits, and due to their own ‘issues’, expressed them with their power. Nothing jived the last two years. The husband kept griping that Castle was made like a doofus, and I couldn’t figure out what the whole emphasis was on Beckett’s family’s past history…borrrring…! I thought a few years of just Castle would be fun. I liked his interaction with his mother and daughter, more, anyway.

      Reply

      • I cannot agree more. Killing off Montgomery and making him a villain really changed the show. The storylines changed a lot after than and not necessarily for the better. My guess is that the main EP and writers changed or that the Network interferred in the show. I’ll never forget where on the old TV series “Mork & Mindy” that the network got rid of her father and grandmother and added a couple younger characters because they believed that would appeal more to younger people. It didn’t work and the next season they brought back her father but never her grandmother.
